Actress Taraji P. Henson is the latest celeb to strip down for PETA “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” campaign against animal cruelty.

Henson says she used to wear fur until he saw the HBO documentary “I Am An Animal,” which exposes the truth behind skinning animals for fashion.

Henson shared with PETA, “When I realized what went into — we’re not just even talking about a full-length fur coat, I’m talking about … fur on your gloves or on your jacket — what goes into making that little piece of fur ripped my heart out. And as humans, we have control. What if someone said, ‘Black skin is the new fur’?”

“You don’t have to kill an animal because you want to be hot and fly … And I really stand by that.”

This winter, I decided to save my husband and me some money on the heating bill, and I almost ruined our sex lives in the process. I set our thermostat for 58 degrees. Then, to stay warm, I wore long underwear – under more long underwear – under fleece, under a terry cloth bathrobe.
I was warm, but I looked and felt puffy, frumpy and disheveled. I was the stereotypical lady with hair rollers — only without the rollers. I didn’t look sexy, and I didn’t feel sexy either.
End result: I was never in the mood.
I started thinking back to last winter, when my sex life was hot, spicy and super enticing. What had changed?
This is what: The winter before, I’d made my sex life a priority. As a result, I was constantly in search of ways to keep the bedroom fires going. Now, just a year later, I’d let sex drop a few rungs down my priority list. What a difference.
So I took some steps to turn up the heat and transform myself from frumpy back to sexy. I asked other women to share how they ensured they felt sexy both in the winter and during the rest of the year, too. What follows is that advice.
1. Primp every day. The definition of “primping” differs from woman to woman. But wearing a ponytail and sweats definitely is not it, and it’s probably what cooled my sex drive this winter. Freelance journalist Janene Mascarella tells me that dabbing on a little perfume everyday will do the trick. Carla Wobser Hawkins says a regular mani/pedi helps her feel sexy — and it keeps her feet soft and silky, too. Two other women told me to groom as if it were summer — shave my legs, arms and nether areas as if I were going to be wearing a bikini. Then moisturize all over.
After hearing this advice, I realized that I mostly needed to get dressed up — even if I wasn’t leaving the house. I have to get out of my sweats and into a sexy outfit before I’m ready to get back out of it again.
2. Start with a hot shower or bath. Taking off layers of clothes so you can romp around naked between cold sheets is a lot like racing into the Massachusetts ocean on New Year’s Day while wearing only a bathing suit. Well, at the very least, it’s a close second.
This is where a hot shower comes in. It serves as a transitional zone, helping to ease you out of your clothing and, eventually, into the bedroom. Bonus points if you take the shower together.
3. Follow up with a massage—and heat up the oil first. When your mind is turned on with worrisome thoughts (I’ve gotta get the groceries and pay the bills and wash the dishes and help the kids with their homework and check my e-mail and call my mother and finish this work project…), your sex drive is often turned off. A massage can help you transition from your stressful (and not-always-so-sexy) roles as mother and breadwinner and into your role as sex Goddess or God. It can also make you feel sexy by lubricating your skin, which can be very dry during winter months. Heat the oil first and things will warm up quickly.
4. Seduce him (and you). Last winter I was seducing my husband on a regular basis. I might get dressed up in heels and a men’s dress shirt and prance around as a lure. I might do a strip tease. This winter, however, I started doing something else. It was this: I would say, “I guess we should have sex. What do you think?” He’d say, “Sure.” We’d go to the bedroom and get naked. It all lacked a certain amount of pizzazz. I realized that in seducing my husband, I was also seducing myself. And once I started seducing him (and me) again, my sex life heated right back up.
5. Set a fitness goal. Freelance writer Heather Durocher tells me that marathon training offered her an unusual side benefit. “I’m so refreshed each day. My endorphins are pumping. My body is leaner and stronger than ever, and I just feel sexy.” Indeed, sexiness is more about how you feel on the inside than about how you look on the outside. And feeling sexy comes from treating your body like a shrine—get enough exercise and rest and eat a healthy diet.

Italian women mixed on sex scandal

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is no stranger to controversy — and he is now battling a sex scandal that could end up in the criminal courts. But he is nothing if not a political survivor.
For days the Italian media has provided wall-to-wall coverage of a magistrate’s investigation into Berlusconi’s private life and his alleged weakness for private dancers.
The allegations include one that Berlusconi paid for sex with a minor. He denies having sex with the teenaged private dancer — and denies knowing she was 17 when they met last year. The dancer has also denied having sex with Berlusconi and says she told him she was 24.
On the streets of Rome many women are shrugging off the latest alleged foibles of their prime minister although there is concern at the message it sends to young women. They say “cosi fan tutti,” roughly translated as “they’re all doing something.”
For a decade Berlusconi’s supporters have defended him against a stream of charges and accusations, claiming that Italian magistrates are out to get him and that a hostile media does nothing but attack him — even though he actually owns large sections of the media.

This latest scandal also involves some of Berlsuconi’s associates — who are suspected of aiding and abetting prostitution. Some have been recorded on wiretaps. All deny wrongdoing.
For his defenders, Berlusconi’s actions are no different from those of other politicians, with their favorite example being U.S. President Bill Clinton. In other words peccadilloes, but nothing criminal.
To his critics, the latest allegations are proof that Berlusconi is guilty of misconduct on a variety of fronts — including corruption and now crimes of a sexual nature. He has been investigated on at least 17 charges since his first time as prime minister in 1994. No charge has yet stuck.
But among ordinary Italians who spoke to CNN, there seems to be little indignation and an overriding mood of resignation, almost lethargy.
At a recent rally where the demonstrators called for Berlusconi’s resignation, about 150 people turned up.
The largest opposition party, the Democratic Party, has asked for the premier to resign, but it hasn’t done it in any formal parliamentarian request.
It has also said it will organize a petition with the hopes of gathering up to 10 million signatures, but it will not start collecting them until February.
At a cafe in Rome’s historic center, owner Daniela says: “All politicians are dirty pigs. Those before Berlusconi did it before him and those after him will do the same. What is the difference?
“I’m so sick and tired of hearing about scandals here and scandals there, what scandal? What is a scandal when they all do it? I try not to read the newspapers because none of them deal with our real problems.
Her daughter and assistant 22-years old Federica says Berlusconi is no worse than most. “He might be the head of the government but everybody has the right to do what he or she pleases. It doesn’t seem to me that he broke the law. If a girl wants to do that kind of business, why not? It is sad but that is the way it is everywhere.
“Should he resign? They all should resign; we are a joke. It is the country of jokes. But how much will it really change?”
A regular at the cafe, shopkeeper Letizia, 36, weighed into the argument “They might be all the same, but now we know how squalid Berlusconi is. He represents us, and he should resign. At least make the gesture even if things don’t change that much. Unfortunately he reflects the average Italian. The one that thinks that everybody can do what it pleases.”
Another regular, Giuliana said that in her clothing shop she can tell that people are sickened by politicians in general. “People are tired of it all. They are de-sensitized. They are so overly nauseated that they don’t give a damn any more and don’t think that the premier’s resignation will change anything. So what is the point?”
Away from the cafe, Analisa Amicucci, a 46-year-old lawyer continues to defend Berlusconi against the witch-hunt. She fervently believes that the premier should not resign and should fight any pressure to do so.
She said: “They (the magistrates and the left wing parties) have nothing to incriminate him. All his trials have ended in nothing, in a soap bubble. They want to subvert the vote of the majority of Italians who elected this government.
“They (the left) want to do a coup through the judiciary. They have not understood that if they want to govern they have to roll up the sleeves and do what Berlusconi does and not rely on the judiciary to their job.
“They’ve tried for years, since 1994. They’ve been unable to prove anything against him on his private business, and now they try to get at him on his private life. They’ve attempted it already with the previous sex scandals. It didn’t work and this affair will not work either.”
A recent poll taken by IPSOS, one of the most reliable and prestigious Italian pollsters, showed that that if Italians were voting now 30.2 percent — the highest support for a party — would still choose Berlusconi’s “People of Freedom” party.
But there are those who are utterly disgusted at his reported behavior
Sixty-year-old clothes store owner Martina Elkan said: “He insults all women… It is an offence to them, to me as a woman. It is teaching young girls “don’t worry about studying…” I’m a mother of two women, and grandmother of four girls. What am I to do?”
“I belong to the generation of the battles for the rights of women. We use to march for them. And for what? We are going backwards not forwards. We fought so that we can be respected as women and now we’ve turned into cannon fodder.”
But even she recognizes there is a certain lack of urgency in the country. “The idea that of his impunity has matured to the level that everybody thinks he can do whatever he wants. We might get angry but what can we do. It is almost better to stay quiet.”

Shame, moral outrage, and the regulation of sex shops

For months, the city of Manassas has engaged in a protracted legislative battle with KK’s Temptations, a little lingerie and sex toy boutique tucked into the city’s Old Town retail strip. When the mother-daughter owned sex shop announced plans to set up shop in Old Town, hundreds of neighbors descended upon the Manassas town hall to warn that the store’s wares could attract pedophiles, child pornographers, and “real perverts” to the city’s quaint business district. Legislators invested $70,000 of city funds in the argument, and commissioned a report to prove that sexually-oriented businesses like KK’s ought to be firmly regulated.

The Manassas residents who protested KK’s opening mainly raised moral and religious objections to the shop; one man argued that a sex shop would invite the work of the Devil into the community. The commissioned report attempted to justify those moral concerns with real-world “secondary effects”—evidence that the moral scourge would actually increase crime rates, or drive down down property values, or otherwise negatively affect the business of the area.

The report, released this month, confirms that stores hawking sexually explicit material can sometimes attract criminals. But the new criminal element isn’t pedophiles and pornographers looking to prey on the town’s children—it’s opportunistic criminals looking to prey on the sex shop’s customers. And why can they do that? Shame.

Criminals are attracted to businesses that serve up easy targets. The leading creator of easy targets? Booze. Bars and clubs attract a clientele that’s drunk, disoriented, and carrying cash. (And Old Town Manassas already hosts several bars). Sexually-oriented businesses attract another type of soft crime target—this type often travels alone, inspires little sympathy from bystanders, and is sometimes reluctant to report his or her own crime. The report quotes a telling line of inquiry: “’If your cell phone was stolen at Target, would you report the theft?’ ‘If the same phone were stolen at a strip club, would you report the theft?’ Many people who say ‘yes’ to the first question demur to the second.”

Why? Maybe because people who are known to have frequented a sexually-oriented business are publicly dismissed as pedophiles, child pornographers, and perverts. At the town hall concerning the KK’s opening, one local resident offered a plan to sabotage the store’s success: “Videotape [the store’s patrons] and put it on the Web,” he advised the council. “Stream them on the Internet.” In a town where patronizing a sex shop is a matter of public shame, street crime can thrive. Later, that crime is used to justify regulating the business out of existence—the report recommends preventing sexually-oriented businesses from opening up near any residences, nursing homes, day cares, schools, parks, libraries, museums, churches, hotels, motels, ballfields, or other adult businesses.

But despite the public outcry, KK’s Temptations just isn’t the type of sexually-oriented business that churns out soft targets. For one, the shame factor is relatively low. KK’s doesn’t provide live entertainment like nude dancers or pornographic film screenings. It doesn’t serve alcohol. And it’s more likely to attract women looking to spice up a bachelorette party than men seeking a heavily stigmatized sexual release (read the report’s odd ruminations on glory holes here). As the report notes, KK’s “is clearly merchandised to appeal to women, a demographic less likely to attract criminal activity than is a business that caters more heavily to young men.” According to shop owner Kim Skokan, the fiery protests against her shop abated after the store actually opened, exposing its nonthreatening selection of lingerie and novelty toys to the community.

The report presented no evidence that a sex shop like KK’s increases a neighborhood’s crime rate. But a sex shop that has glancing similarities to KK’s could increase crime—and the city can use that link to satisfy the town’s moral objection to all sexually-oriented wares. “It is important to remember . . . that lawful sex businesses do not generally ’cause’ crime and some may have little or no effect on crime rates around them,” the report reads. “Despite the controversy around it, KK’s Temptations is not the type of business that is likely to attract the sort of criminal activity found at some sex businesses in other communities. . . . The problem is that a business with similar merchandise but a different style, a different location and different operating hours might very well attract” criminals. Because of that possibility, the report recommends that benign shops like KK’s be subjected to regulation as well.

There’s one sex shop in Manassas that fits the description of a potentially problematic outlet: MVC Couples Boutique. But according to the report, even MVC hasn’t increased crime on its block: “Manassas Police report no criminal problems with it, either.” The report reads that the store “was clean, brightly-lighted, and appointed and merchandised as well as many mall stores. Managers on duty during two visits were alert to activities around them. The combination of clean premises, good lighting and good management go a long way toward discouraging criminal activities—and driving away people likely to engage in them.”

So: Sex shops like KK’s Temptations don’t attract crime. The town’s more classically problematic sex shops don’t attract crime, either. The real problem is other residents—like the ones presenting far-fetched pedophilia concerns at a town hall meeting—who perceive these businesses to be crime magnets. According to the report, neighbors typically reject a sex shop not because of the “content of the materials handled by the businesses,” but rather because they think the store is “trashy,” a “bad influence on children,” and that it “draws unsavory people.” Due to the opinions of surrounding neighbors, appraisers see a sex shop as a property value killer. The report concludes that “even the tamest of sex businesses can have a negative secondary effect on the market values of nearby properties.”

Sexually-oriented businesses don’t attract crime or drive down property values in and of themselves. Persistent negative perceptions of these businesses, however, can have a devastating effect on the surrounding area. The city of Manassas could spend more money regulating businesses like KK’s Temptations out of sight. Or its residents could simply attempt a bit of an attitude adjustment.
